An IPTV subscription gives you access; the player app is what you actually use every day. The right app makes the difference between a clunky channel list and something that feels like a proper cable box. Which app is right depends on your TV's operating system, so this guide is organised by platform.
How TV players are different
IPTV players don't include any channels themselves. You add your provider's login and the app displays the channels, guide and on-demand library. Most apps support one or more of three login types: Xtream Codes (username, password and server), an M3U playlist link, or a portal URL for MAG-style boxes.
On Samsung and LG TVs, many players use a different approach: the app shows your TV's MAC address, and you add your playlist through the developer's website. It feels odd the first time, but it means you never have to type a long URL with a TV remote.
Samsung (Tizen)
Samsung smart TVs run Tizen and install apps from Smart Hub. The common IPTV players are:
- IBO Player: clean interface, activated via website with MAC address and device key. Paid after a trial period.
- SET IPTV: long-standing, supports guide data. Paid activation.
- Smart IPTV: one of the oldest; simple, M3U-based. One-off activation fee.
Availability in the Samsung store changes from time to time, and models older than about five years may not list every app.
LG (webOS)
LG TVs run webOS and use the LG Content Store. The same players (IBO Player, SET IPTV, Smart IPTV and similar) are generally available, activated the same way. LG's Magic Remote makes navigating guides pleasant.
Google TV and Android TV (Sony, TCL, Hisense, Philips)

Roku, Vidaa and others
Roku doesn't support standard IPTV player apps well, and Hisense's Vidaa platform has a limited selection. On these TVs, a Fire TV Stick or Google TV streamer plugged into an HDMI port is the easiest solution.
Apple TV
The Apple TV 4K is an excellent IPTV device thanks to its fast processor. Good players in the App Store include iPlayTV, IPTVX and GSE Smart IPTV. Most support Xtream Codes logins and guide data. Some are paid up front.

When to add a streaming stick instead

- Paste login details instead of typing them.
- Set up favourites and hide unwanted categories on day one.
- Keep the app updated, but don't rush to install a major update the night of a big game.
- Remember: the app fee goes to the app developer; your subscription is separate.
